Monozygotic twins: identical in name only.

چکیده
To the Editor: We found the study of clinical responses to opioids by Angst et al.1 to be an excellent first-of-its-kind study for distinguishing the contribution of heredity versus environment. Much work has been done using twins to separate heredity from environment and this addition to our literature is timely. Although the use of twins to separate nature from nurture is a long-established model, we would have appreciated more detailed analysis of the monozygotic twins. Genetically, dizygotic twins are no different from other nontwin siblings (assuming the same parents). Contrary to what was stated by the authors, monozygotic twins do not share 100% of their DNA. Copy number variants and single-nucleotide polymorphisms have been discovered, which distinguish one monozygotic twin from the other.2,3 Moreover, there are differences in regulation and expression of the shared monozygotic genes. These very small and seemingly inconsequential differences probably account for the differences in disease susceptibility between monozygotic twins4–9 and may be significant in their reaction to opioids. Twins raised together do not share 100% of the same environment. Very small differences in environment such as those that occurred in the womb or even in the seemingly identical home and school environments may result in the methylation of a gene in one twin but not in the other.9–11 Epigenetic variability has also been found to increase with age, which may lead to increasing differences as monozygotic twins move from infancy to adulthood.5 We look forward to further investigation from the authors, which will address these additional factors.

Monozygotic twins are genetically identical individuals who can also be mirror image twins and the Differences between them result from environmental factors. current study, monozygotic twins were analyzed in different dentitions of primary, mixed and permanent. As a conclusion, although genetic factors are naturally potent, environmental factors’ role can be increased and weaken the genetic ...
متن کاملNasal Septum and External Nasal Deformity Similarities in Monozygotic Twins and Paranasal Computed Tomography Analysis
Since identical twins occur as a result of the division of one egg, they have the same genetic structure. Therefore, their phenotypes and sex are also always the same. However, due to the effect of environmental factors, some of the characteristics of twins living in different regions appear to develop differently. In our case of 17-year-old maternal twins, we emphasized that nasal pathologies ...
متن کاملTransplantation in identical twins: another option for breast reconstruction.
BACKGROUND Deriving their name from the Greek word plastikos, meaning related to molding, plastic surgeons have made their reputation by transplanting tissues from one area of the body to another to "remold" defects caused by trauma, congenital anomaly, or disease. Dr. Joseph Murray, a plastic surgeon, performed the first successful kidney transplant between identical twins in 1954. The authors...
متن کاملAnthropometric Comparison of Cross-Sectional External Ear between Monozygotic Twin
Anthropologists are commonly believed that characteristics and the shapes of the human external ear are extensively different. The objective of this study is to explore the potential of anthropometric data from external ear in individualization of monozygotic twin which also known as identical twin. Data of external ear features using 16 landmarks along with the measurements of inter-landmark l...

Mutations in the WT1 gene, leading to Denys-Drash syndrome and Frasier syndrome, can also cause isolated steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (ISRNS). Previous studies have reported six pairs of monozygotic twins with WT1 mutations, including one presenting with discordant phenotypes with identical WT1 mutations being of paternal origin and five pairs of monozygotic twins presenting the same ph...
